All Cotten Candy Romances; But, Does She Have A Point?
As a girl in the STEM world, I sometimes hear these questions: "Is this your work?", "Who helped you on this project?", "Have you done this ALL BY YOURSELF?"; believe me, they hurt.
What bothers me is that boys never hear these questions(even the real cheater ones). What is interesting is for some people in academia, being a girl comes with this pre-belief that the person in front of them knows less, is not capable enough, or is "simply lucky" to be in this position. Recently I stumbled upon some of Ali Hazelwood's books. Her books were so popular on TikTok, and I saw the covers everywhere. So I decided to read some of them. I read "the Love Hypothesis", which is her most famous book so far. And I also read "Under One Roof", one of her "STEM" novellas. About the books, if I am being honest, I didn't particularly like any of her books. They felt like Wattpad books and were just romances with no background. (There is a but here)
"Certain people , men of course , discouraged me, saying [science] was not a good career for women. That pushed me even more to persevere."
But, she had some tiny points in her books hidden in the pages. She mentioned how women are not taken seriously in academia. How some people do hire girls not because of their knowledge but because of their looks How even the best ones are set aside in comparison with a male colleague even if, in reality, he has nothing to offer. And as a girl who has been in academia (and in one of the most "male-dominated" environments -mechanical engineering- I can tell you this is true. Now, How can we solve this prejudice against girls in the STEM area?
